Beijing, June 25 /Xin Hua/ — Official representative of the Ministry of Defense of the PRC Zhang Xiaogan on Thursday denied recent statements by the Japanese Defense Minister, which cast doubt on the transparency of China’s national defense budgets, calling them slander and conspiracy theory.
Zhan Xiaogan made this statement at a press conference, emphasizing that the data on the above-mentioned cases in China remains transparent and open.
China’s expenditures on national defense are at a “reasonable, moderate, and restrained level,” noted Zhang Xiaogan, adding that for many years these expenditures have accounted for less than 1.5 percent of the country’s GDP.
On the contrary, Japan’s defense budget has rapidly grown for 14 consecutive years and has increased to 2 percent of its GDP, he emphasized.
Zhang Xiaogan noted that the purpose of Japan’s distortion of information about China’s national defense is to divert public attention, mislead public opinion, and conceal its ambitions and actions towards “remilitarization.”
