Islamabad, June 24 /Xinhua/ — Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif stated on Tuesday that the Islamabad memorandum of understanding (MoU) does not include the Iranian ballistic missile program, emphasizing that this issue was “never discussed” and “never on the agenda” during the negotiations.
Speaking at a joint press conference with the President of Iran Massoud Pezeshkian, Sh. Sharif warned against possible misunderstandings regarding the agreement, stating that the memorandum of understanding is aimed at strengthening peace and stability and does not contain provisions concerning ballistic missiles.
Sh. Sharif welcomed the President of Iran and confirmed Pakistan’s commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation in the areas of trade, economic development, infrastructure, restoration, and regional peace.
“Pakistan and Iran are not just neighbors, we are brothers connected by a centuries-old common history, faith, culture, and civilizational ties,” he said, adding that “Iran’s successes are our successes, and its failures are our failures.”
The prime minister thanked the Iranian leadership for trusting Pakistan’s “honest and sincere” mediation efforts. According to him, the signing of the memorandum of understanding in Islamabad helped to put an end to the conflict, which could have spread throughout the entire region, and led to the first talks at the technical level in Swiss Bürglen.
