Moscow, June 23 /Xin Hua/ — The 12th International Scientific and Expert Forum “Primakov Readings” opened on Tuesday in Moscow. More than 400 leading foreign experts in the field of international security, world politics and economics from 17 countries, including China, Brazil, Qatar, Iran, and the USA, are participating in the event, which is held in the year of the 70th anniversary of the Institute of World Economy and International Relations named after E. M. Primakov of the Russian Academy of Sciences /IMEMO RAS/. The theme of the forum is “World Without Rules: Power Play?”.
As noted in his welcome address to the forum participants, the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, the theme of the readings quite accurately characterizes those troubling tendencies that have been clearly identified in modern international relations. “As is well known, Western countries advocate for a certain ‘rules-based peace.’ However, it was not difficult to ascertain that behind this slogan hide openly neocolonialist ambitions, disrespect for the sovereignty of independent states, the desire to interfere in their internal affairs, to force them to change their foreign policy priorities,” the welcome address published on the Kremlin website states.
The text emphasizes that “Russia, like many other countries in the world, categorically does not agree with such ‘rules’. “We stand for other, truly democratic foundations of the world order — mandatory norms of international law for everyone, the indisputable authority of the UN Security Council, mutual respect and equality of all countries, and the free choice by countries of their own path of development,” the Russian leader noted, adding that considering the extremely complex, turbulent global situation, the forum participants have much to think about, discuss, and debate.
Within the framework of the forum, five working sessions are planned, as well as the traditional speech by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Sergey Lavrov, which will take place on June 24.
“Primakov Readings” — an annual international meeting of experts in the field of international relations and the world economy. The forum has been held since 2015 and is named in honor of the Russian statesman, diplomat, and scholar Yevgeny Primakov.
