Hanzhou, June 22 /Xinhua/ — As part of the recently concluded 22nd China International Cartoon & Animation Festival, a special program was organized to showcase masterpieces of Russian animation in honor of the 90th anniversary of Soyuzmultfilm, which attracted the attention of numerous Chinese viewers.
Local resident Zhou Yan came to the screening with his daughter, who had just started kindergarten. He shared his impressions after watching the cartoon “Well, Just You Wait!”: “I often watched the story about the wolf and the hare on TV when I was little, it’s very funny. I was pleasantly surprised to see the cartoons I know from childhood here.”
As noted by the head of the international projects of “Soyuzmultfilm” Alina Nefedova, this is already the fourth year of the film studio’s participation in the Chinese International Festival of Animation and Comics, and it can be considered the “Chinese stage” of celebrating the 90th anniversary of the legendary animation studio.
“In addition to classic films, such as ‘Hedgehog in the Fog,’ we have also brought new works,” he said, emphasizing that Russia and China attach great importance to the art of animation, especially its role in educating children and conveying knowledge, which is an important foundation for cooperation between the two countries.
In recent years, Soyuzmultfilm has been actively cooperating with Chinese companies. As an example, A. Nefedov cited the broadcast of the Chinese animated series “Ice Brotherhood” in Russia, as well as the screening of the Russian animated series “Umka” in China. She expressed confidence in the broad prospects for cooperation with China.
Within the framework of the festival, an International Conference on Animation and the Gaming Industry 2026 also took place, where, for the first time, a joint exposition was presented by a combined delegation of 23 Russian companies. Russian producers presented to their Chinese colleagues a number of the best animated and short films.
Traditionally, the highest award “Golden Monkey” is presented at the festival. This year, in the nomination “Best Animated Short Film,” the main prize was awarded to the film “When We Were Grass,” presented by the Russian studio “Master-film”.
In the context of the “Belt and Road” initiative and the intersection of the years of culture of China and Russia, the animation industries of the two countries possess complementary advantages and enormous potential for cooperation, noted the deputy chairman of the Chinese Animation Association, Cai Qizhong.
The Executive Director of the Russian Animation Film Association, Irina Mastusova, in turn, emphasized that the Chinese International Animation and Comics Festival has served for many years as an effective channel for entering the Chinese market and meeting with Chinese partners, and is also an important bridge for mutual trust and exchange of experience between animation companies of the two countries.She expressed hope that within the framework of the current festival, Russian animation will be able to fully demonstrate its unique artistic style, advanced creative concepts, and high-quality intellectual property resources of Russian animation, which will allow to bring bilateral cooperation to a new level.
Both sides recognized that the development of Chinese-Russian animation cooperation represents not only mutually beneficial collaboration at the industry level, but also a vivid example of cultural dialogue and mutual enrichment of civilizations.
They hope to use this conference as a new starting point and to work together on creating a new chapter in Chinese-Russian cooperation in the field of animation.
