Bürgenstock /Switzerland/, June 21 /Xinhua/ — Delegations from the United States and Iran on Sunday at the mountain resort of Bürgenstock in the central part of Switzerland began negotiations on the implementation of the memorandum of understanding, signed by both parties, with the aim of reaching a final agreement.
This is the first round of negotiations between the two parties after the signing of the memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the conflict on all fronts, including Lebanon.
U.S. Vice President Jay D. Pence, heading the group of American negotiators, said before the start of the talks that the opening of the Strait of Hormuz and the cessation of Iran’s nuclear program have already been achieved.
“The question now is how much more we can achieve together? Can we open a new page? Can we forever change relations in the Middle East? Or will we return to old methods, which are not preferable for us?” — indicated J. D. Vance.
The group of US negotiators also includes the special envoy of US President Donald Trump, Steven Witkoff, and the son-in-law of the American president, Jared Kushner.
According to the Iranian semi-official news agency Fars, the Iranian delegation includes the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Abbas Araghchi, as well as high-level representatives of security services, the central bank, and the oil industry.
Mediators from Pakistan and Qatar are participating in the negotiations.
The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, is also on site for the negotiations. On the social network X, he reported that he met there with the Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis to discuss “the latest events concerning Iran” and other issues.
“At this critical moment, it is important to give diplomats every opportunity to achieve success,” emphasized R. Grossi.
