Tehran, June 18 /Xin Hua/ — The supreme leader of Iran, Mojtaba Khamenei, stated on Thursday that, despite differing opinions on this issue, he gave permission to sign a peaceful memorandum of understanding between Tehran and Washington.
M. Khamenei made an appropriate statement in an address to the Iranian people, which was disseminated by state media several hours after the memorandum on the cessation of the war was signed by the President of Iran Masoud Pezeshkian and US President Donald Trump.
He noted that the relevant Iranian officials have made significant efforts to reach the current stage of negotiations, acting “out of a sense of compassion and goodwill.” He added that “it was precisely the President of the United States who used all possible levers of influence for this.”
M. Khamenei emphasized: “In principle, I had a different opinion, but I gave permission in connection with the obligation that the esteemed president of Iran, as the chairman of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), took over from me personally and on behalf of other council members — to defend the rights of the Iranian people and the resistance front, as well as after he stated that he was ready to take responsibility for this.”
The supreme leader of Iran also reported that M. Pezeshkian and other members of the VSNB stated: if the United States puts forward “excessive demands,” they will not accept them.
