In the aquatory of Sanduao in the city of Ninde, Fujian province, thousands of fish cages sway. The large yellow croaker is not just a fish on which the livelihood of local fishermen depends, but a full-fledged production chain, including fry breeding, sea cultivation, processing, and sales.
Ningde has an extensive marine area and rich fishery resources. In 2025, the total production volume of aquatic products in the city reached 1.217 million tons, of which 222.4 thousand tons were large yellow croakers. Being the birthplace of artificial breeding of large yellow croakers in China and the largest base for rearing fry and commercial fish, Ningde is actively modernizing and transforming its marine fishery.
Wooden cages and foam plastic floats were mainly used here in the past. Since 2018, a large-scale modernization of fish farming facilities has been underway in Ninde, introducing environmentally friendly plastic equipment. Almost 700 thousand plastic cages have been installed throughout the city’s water area. The sea has become cleaner, and fish farming is more organized. Some leading enterprises, such as the food company “Sandyuao,” have already built 84 deep-water wind-resistant plastic ecological cages. The company employs 316 people and is a source of income for 2,190 fishing families.
Another important change is that the servicing of fishing farms and their management have moved directly to the sea. In Nindé, 15 marine micro-districts, 8 “fish hospitals,” and 41 fish disease monitoring points have been created. These facilities are equipped with an integrated wind-solar energy system and a seawater desalination system. They provide fish farmers with technical support and everyday maintenance.
Processing and the cold chain help the large yellow croaker go further. A typical example is the enterprise “Cizinishen”, which unites the breeding of fry, the cultivation of commercial fish, processing, cold chain, and sales. In one of the internet studios, the leading representative presents the products via live streaming, and the cold chain system instantly responds to orders. In a day, such an internet studio processes about 8 thousand orders amounting to approximately 1 million yuan. Sales through internet channels account for about 10% of the company’s total sales volume.
Currently, Nindē has 370 enterprises processing seafood and more than 50 cold storage warehouses with a total capacity of over 250 thousand tons. Nindē relies on a national nursery of the large yellow croaker breed and a state key laboratory for selection in marine aquaculture, promoting selection and scientific-technical developments. At the same time, the “smart ocean” system is constantly being improved. For the residents of Nindē, this sea is not only a means of existence but also a future. Nindē understands that only high-quality development will allow moving forward.
