At the Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, the results of the competition for scientific achievements for applicants to postgraduate studies in 2026 were summarized. The new selection format was conducted for the first time as part of the admission campaign. It became part of the university’s systematic work on attracting strong, motivated candidates to postgraduate studies who have already demonstrated themselves in science.
The training of highly qualified personnel is one of the key directions in the development of SPbPU. The university forms two postgraduate trajectories: academic and industrial. The first is oriented towards the development of fundamental scientific schools, publication activity, and integration of research results into the educational process. The second is focused on solving applied problems together with industrial partners. This approach allows building individual research trajectories for graduate students and strengthening the connection between scientific work, educational programs, and the real tasks of the industry. These provisions are reflected in the graduate program reference of SPbPU in the university development program for 2025–2036.
The scientific achievements competition became one of the tools for the early selection of candidates who already have confirmed research backgrounds and are ready to continue working in the scientific team of the Polytechnic University. A total of 59 applications were submitted for the competition in six scientific specialties. Graduates and students of SPbPU participated, as well as representatives of other Russian universities: SPbSU, ITMO, UrFU, PNIIPU, SibGU named after M. F. Reshetnev, SPbSUT named after Prof. M. A. Bonch-Bruyevich, PGUPS of Emperor Alexander I and NGU named after P. F. Lesgaft.
The largest number of applications (18) was submitted for specialty 5.2.3. “Regional and Sectoral Economy.” Participants showed significant interest in specialties 2.5.22. “Product Quality Management. Standardization. Production Organization” (12 applications) and 2.3.5. “Mathematical and Software Support of Computing Systems, Complexes, and Computer Networks” (9 applications).
For the university, the scientific achievements competition is not just an additional means of admission to graduate school, but an important step towards a more precise search and support of future researchers. Our task is to ensure that motivated candidates, who already understand their scientific trajectory and are ready to work for results, are admitted to graduate school. We consistently strengthen the system of training highly qualified personnel: we develop academic and industrial graduate programs, build a connection between research and the tasks of scientific schools and industrial partners, and improve the support for graduate students.Such competitions help us to see strong candidates in advance and create conditions for them in which they can more quickly engage in scientific work and reach the defense of their dissertation,” noted Yuri Fomin, Vice-Rector for Research.
As a result of the competitive selection, 26 people became winners. Most of them represent Polite, which confirms the high scientific potential of the university’s graduates and students. At the same time, the participation of candidates from other universities shows that the competition can become an open tool for attracting promising researchers to the scientific teams of Polite.
Competition results
Winners of the competition upon admission to the postgraduate program at SPbPU are equated with those who received the maximum number of points for each entrance examination.
Ahead is the main stage of admission to the PhD program at SPbPU in 2026. The university invites graduates of master’s and specialist programs interested in a scientific career, working in a research team, participating in applied and fundamental projects, as well as in the development of their own scientific results under the guidance of a leading scientist of the Polytechnic.
Conducting a competition of scientific achievements enhances the quality of admission to graduate school, helps to identify in advance the most prepared candidates, and supports the continuity of the scientific school of SPbPU. For the university, this is part of a broader effort to develop personnel potential, improve the effectiveness of graduate training, and form a new generation of researchers capable of solving the tasks of science, education, and high-tech industry.
Ahead is the main stage of admission to the graduate school of SPbPU. Documents can be submitted starting from June 20. The admission conditions, list of scientific specialties, and the deadlines of the admission campaign can be found on the graduate school page of SPbPU:Admission to postgraduate studies at SPbPU.
