Xiamen, June 14 /Xinhua/ — On Saturday, in the coastal city of Xiamen, an event was held to establish business contacts and sign agreements, under which enterprises from mainland China, as well as companies and trade associations from various regions of Taiwan, signed cooperation agreements aimed at expanding economic ties and trade between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait.
In accordance with agreements, companies from mainland China will purchase a range of specialized agricultural and fish products, including atemoya, pomelo, and tea, produced in such counties and cities of Taiwan as Taidong, Yilan, and Nantou.
The event was held with the aim of promoting a package of 10 political measures announced by the CPC Central Committee Office on work with Taiwan in April of this year to facilitate exchanges and cooperation across both sides of the strait. These measures are intended to meet the practical needs of compatriots in Taiwan and benefit youth, farmers, fishermen, as well as small and medium-sized enterprises.
Speaking at the event, the head of the Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China on Taiwan Affairs and the Office of the Taiwan Affairs Council Sun Tao said that the future of Taiwan depends on the development and progress of mainland China, as well as on the reunification and strength of the Motherland.
He called on residents on both sides of the strait to defend the common interests of the Chinese nation, deepen the integrated development of both shores of the strait, and strive for the reunification of the Motherland.
The Vice Chairman of the Kuomintang party, Zhang Zhungun, stated that exchanges and cooperation between the two sides of the strait remain the best way to strengthen mutual understanding and improve the well-being of people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. He said that the Kuomintang party will continue to support the peaceful development of cross-strait relations and strive for greater benefits for society.
Representatives of Taiwanese business, attending the event, stated that these 10 measures will become a “breath of fresh air” for revitalizing the relevant sectors of Taiwan’s economy and improving the population’s living standards. They also said that these agreements will help increase the volume of Taiwanese agricultural and fishery product supplies to the mainland China market and bring tangible benefits to farmers and fishermen.
They also expressed hope that both shores will strengthen interaction and dialogue in a spirit of goodwill, which will allow for the implementation of more joint initiatives and the achievement of concrete results.
