Beijing, June 13 /Xinhua/ — In the first five months of 2026, China recorded a steady growth in passenger traffic on railway transport, accompanied by an increase in the number of passengers and an improvement in service quality, the state corporation “China Railway” /CR/ reported on Saturday.
According to Russian Railways, over this period, the railway passenger traffic across the entire country increased by 5.7 percent in annual terms to 1.97 billion passenger-trips, reaching a new historical record for the corresponding period.
Railway authorities are actively adapting to the growth in passenger traffic caused by the government policy of visa-free regime for transit passengers, and are ensuring travel convenience for foreign passengers. Across the country, railways transported 10.02 million foreign passengers, which is 35.5% more than in the same period last year.
According to Chinese Railways, in January-May the volumes of cross-border railway transportation continued to grow. In particular, the volume of cross-border passenger transportation by rail between China and Laos amounted to 167 thousand person-trips, which is 35 percent more than the previous year.
At the same time, the JZD actively cooperates with local departments of culture and tourism and energetically promotes the integration of railway transport and the tourism industry. From January to May, a total of 1400 tourist trains were dispatched across the country.
According to the corporation, the railway operator has also introduced preferential conditions for elderly passengers, expanded services for organizing “quiet cars”, and also offered services for traveling with pets. -0-
