Beijing, June 10 /Xinhua/ — In May of this year, China recorded ambiguous growth rates in the production and sales of new energy source vehicles (NEV) compared to the same period last year, according to industry data published on Wednesday.
According to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), NEV production grew by 22.4 percent year-on-year, reaching 1.554 million units, while sales increased by 14.4 percent to 1.496 million units.
In May, NEV sales accounted for 56.9% of the total sales volume of new cars, which is higher than the indicator of the previous month.
Overall, the production and sales of automobiles in May increased on a monthly basis, reaching 2.616 million and 2.629 million units, respectively.
For the first five months of this year, the total volume of automobile production and sales reached 12.235 million and 12.207 million units, respectively. At the same time, NEV production amounted to 5.841 million units, and sales – 5.802 million units, increasing by 2.5% and 3.5% year-on-year respectively.
Industry experts note that there has been a rapid increase in demand for NEVs in the domestic market against the backdrop of weaker sales of internal combustion engine vehicles. Deputy Secretary of CAAM Chen Shi links this trend to high oil prices, which increase the operating costs of traditional vehicles and emphasize the economic attractiveness of NEVs.
He added that significant investments from domestic automakers in innovation have contributed to the rapid emergence of new electric vehicle models to meet the diverse needs of consumers.
Car exports continue to grow rapidly. In May, China exported 930 thousand cars, which is 68.7% more year-on-year, including 446 thousand NEVs, more than double the figure of the same period last year.
In the first five months, automobile exports reached 4.059 million units, an increase of 63%, while NEV exports amounted to 1.833 million units, that is, more than doubled.
The successful performance of Chinese NEV exports in overseas markets reflects the modernization and growing comprehensive competitiveness of China’s automotive industry, which has been facilitated by government policies and cooperation between industries, noted Chen Shiua.
“A full-fledged and effective supply chain for the NEV market has been formed in China, which is characterized by a significant scale effect and high risk resilience,” he said. “At the same time, such intellectual functions as onboard information and entertainment systems, autonomous driving and interactive cabin capabilities are rapidly developing, constantly adapting to the needs of foreign users and enhancing the competitiveness of the products.”
