Chengdu, June 10 /Xin Hua/ — On June 3, a giant panda cub was born in the Republic of Korea, the Chinese Center for Giant Panda Conservation and Research announced.
A newborn female weighing more than 170 g appeared in the themed park “Everland”. “The baby is vocal and very energetic; her mother, the giant panda Aibao, licked and fed the baby, demonstrating skilled maternal behavior,” said Wan Pingfen, an expert on giant pandas from the above-mentioned center, who arrived in the Republic of Korea to assist with the birth. He confirmed that on June 3 in the second half of the day the baby already began to feed on mother’s milk.
Mother panda and her cub are in good health.
Van Pinfen noted that so far, as signs of labor appeared with Aibao, the center provided on-site assistance and created an online group of experts for close monitoring of the labor process, working in close cooperation with colleagues from the ROK. He will remain in the Republic of Korea for some time to care for Aibao and the newborn, while the online group of experts continues to provide remote assistance and support.
The baby pandas, big pandas Ai Bao and Le Bao, were sent to the Republic of Korea from China in 2016 under a 15-year lease agreement. Since then, this pair has produced four cubs.
Over the past decade, China and the Republic of Korea have cooperated in the fields of giant panda breeding, disease prevention, public education among the population, and relevant scientific research, achieving positive results in the conservation of endangered species.-0-
