Kabul, June 8 /Xinhua/ — In Afghanistan, fewer than 75 people have died and three more have been injured over the past 2.5 months as a result of water-related incidents. This was reported on Monday by the National Directorate for Disaster Management of the country.
Among the deceased are seven women and 41 children, which emphasizes the vulnerability of women and minors to dangers associated with water. According to the authorities, these cases indicate a worrying trend of drownings caused by strong river currents, lack of swimming skills, and knowledge of safe behavior on the water.
The latest tragedy occurred last Saturday. Three teenagers drowned while swimming in a rapidly overflowing river in the eastern province of Nangarhar.
Authorities urged citizens to strictly observe safety rules and precautions during swimming and recreation near rivers, lakes, and other bodies of water.
