SPbGASU and Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU) Successfully Held an International Workshop for Young Researchers

On May 29, employees of the Department of Transport Systems and Road-Bridge Construction (TSIDMS) of the Automobile and Road Faculty of SPBGASU, together with colleagues from Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU), organized and held the first online workshop session “Bridging the Future.”

The main goal of the workshop series is to exchange experiences and establish professional contacts between young scientists from Russia and China. The event was held in the format of a teleconference between two universities with the possibility of remote connection. The venue for the workshop at SPbGASU was the Educational Center for Digital Competencies. A total of more than 30 people participated in the workshop. The key topic of the first session was advanced methods of analysis of steel-concrete bridges (“Advanced Analysis of Steel-Concrete Bridges”).

At the beginning of the seminar, representatives of the specialized university departments talked about their main scientific directions and competencies. An associate professor from the TSIDMS department spoke with a report.Anton Syrkov,who is also the chairman of the Russian national group of the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE). In his report, he talked about the main history of the university, the research competence of the department’s team, as well as current and prospective research projects. On the Chinese side, the department was represented by Associate Professor Xia Chaoyi, who was also a co-organizer of the meeting from BJTU.

In the scientific part of the workshop, reports on various topics related to the analysis of steel-reinforced concrete bridges were presented. The first speaker was a master’s student from BJTUZhang Chao(Zhang Chao) with a report on the distribution of the temperature field in a steel-reinforced concrete span structure for a magnetic levitation transport system (maglev).

The second speaker was an associate professor of SPbGASUNikolay KozakWith an overview report on the possibility of analyzing steel-reinforced concrete span structures taking into account the degradation of connecting elements caused by fatigue processes. Nikolai Kozak has been engaged in this field for the past five years, and this report became the first to summarize all the obtained results.

Then, within the framework of the workshop, there was a report by Professor BJTUChu Li(Zhu Li), in which he presented a method for designing suspension bridges using analytical stress fields to determine the optimal shape of the main load-bearing cable. The next was a joint presentation by students of the specialty and master’s program of the TSIDMS department of SPbGASU:Igor RudakovиOleg ZorochkinPresented the results of their studies on the assessment of reliability and operational risks of steel-reinforced concrete bridges using data on road traffic. This report became the first experience for our students in an English-language presentation at a specialized scientific event.

Final report of the associate professor of BJTUSu Han(Su Han) was dedicated to the study of the mechanisms of degradation of mechanical characteristics and the prediction of fatigue durability of flexible steel-reinforced concrete slab bridges made of atmospheric-resistant steel in corrosive environments. This topic is very close to the scientific interests of Nikolai Kozak. During the discussion of the presentation results, an agreement was reached on the necessity of joint work and exchange of experience in this area.

In addition to the presentations themselves, active discussions on the presented materials took place within the workshop. This format is especially important for young researchers, as it allows them to receive constructive feedback and simultaneously understand the significance and relevance of their research.

According to the organizers’ plan, in the autumn the work of this initiative will continue on a regular basis and the following sessions dedicated to other relevant topics will be held.
