Baku, June 5 /Xinhua/ — Azerbaijan, the host of the World Environment Day 2026, on Friday officially launched a series of events and initiatives aimed at raising environmental awareness and accelerating climate actions.

The event under the motto “Replenished by nature. Paradise of climate. Paradise of our future” is organized by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan together with the United Nations Environment Programme /UNEP/.

As reported by local media, speaking at the opening ceremony, the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan, Rashad Ismayilov, stated that holding the World Environment Day in partnership with UNEP confirms the country’s commitment to the global environmental agenda and international cooperation in the field of environmental protection. He also noted the reforms being implemented in the country to improve environmental governance, including the modernization of the waste management system.

In a video message to the participants of the ceremony, UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that the last eleven years have been the hottest on record. According to him, rising temperatures, air pollution, land degradation, and ecosystem destruction are already causing damage to human health, water sources, and food security.

Established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 and held under the aegis of UNEP, World Environment Day was first celebrated in 1973 and today is one of the largest international platforms for promoting the environmental agenda and nature conservation initiatives.
