Lanzhou, June 4 /Xinhua/ — The 3rd International Conference of Sinologists opened on Wednesday in the city of Dunhuang in Gansu Province /Northwest China/, a key node on the ancient Silk Road. During the event, scholars and cultural figures from around the world discuss how Chinese civilization can contribute to solving common global challenges under conditions of increasing uncertainty.
The event, the main theme of which was “Uniting the wisdom of civilizations, jointly addressing the challenges of modernity,” attracted more than 300 representatives from almost 70 countries.
Sinology originated in China, belongs to the whole world, and is a shared intellectual heritage of all humanity, said the sinologist, former president of Ethiopia Mulatu Teshome.
“This event contributes to the construction of new and strong bridges on the path to peace, based on mutual trust, common human dignity, empathy, and a sustainable world,” stated Tiziana Lippiello, rector of Ca’ Foscari University of Venice /Ca’ Foscari University of Venice/.
She also added that in the city of Dunhuang, history, culture, and imagination intersect across the centuries, which gives today’s dialogue a special significance.
Four subforums are planned to be held within the conference, dedicated to topics such as the global significance of Chinese modernization, the peace-loving values of Chinese civilization, the historical evolution of Sinology and intercultural exchanges, as well as the contemporary relevance of traditional Chinese philosophical thought.
The choice of the city of Dunhuang as the host city and venue for this conference carries special symbolic significance. More than two thousand years ago, this city was an important crossroads on the ancient Silk Road, witnessing the transportation of Chinese silk and tea to the West, as well as the introduction into China of previously unknown cultures, such as grapes, carrots, and pomegranates.
Today, the city of Dunhuang is an important cultural landmark, hosting 3 UNESCO World Heritage sites and more than 260 cultural monuments of various types. -0-
