In the project “Active citizen» is overvoting, in which participants chose a name for the female Andean condor — a rare scavenger bird fromMoscow Zoo. More than 180,000 people took part in it.
Citizens chose from five options. All of them were associated with a bird — it originates from South America. The absolute favorite was the name Patagonia. That is the name of a vast geographical region in the south of Argentina. This option received 47 percent of the votes.
You can see the female Andean condor in the “Birds’ Rock” exhibit in the enclosure on the old zoo area. Her neighbor is a male named Kuzya. He is distinguished by a large dark red comb. He got his name according to an old tradition: all male condors in the zoo are called that. Specialists are hopeful evaluating the prospects of this pair. Andean condors are monogamous and form a lifelong bond. While the birds are getting used to each other, they mostly communicate at feeding time. The female prefers to spend the rest of the time on an elevation, while the male is settling in the lower part of the enclosure.
The voting was prepared by the project “Active Citizen” together with the capital’sDepartment of Culture. Users have repeatedly chosen names for the inhabitants of the Moscow Zoo, includingCranes-flycatchers of Irkutsk and Chui,Rhinoceros hornbill chick Pta La,Alpaca Zephyr,hygiene Akela and panda Katyusha.
Project“Active citizen”has been operating since 2014. Over this time, more than seven million people have joined it, with over 7,600 votes cast. Monthly, between 30 and 40 decisions are implemented in the city. The project is being developed by the State Corporation “New Management Technologies” and the capitalDepartment of Information Technologies.Â
