Los Angeles, June 3 /Xin Hua/ — The suspect who took hostages in one of the banks in the city of Bakersfield, California, was neutralized. All hostages were released early Wednesday morning after a prolonged standoff. Local authorities reported this.
“The hostage situation was resolved after a shootout involving officers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” the Bakerfield Police Department press release states.
As reported by the police, the suspect was declared dead, all hostages were freed unharmed, underwent medical examination, and received the necessary assistance. The hostage situation ended around 4:20 a.m. on Wednesday.
The confrontation began around 1:00 PM on Tuesday after the Bakersfield police responded to a bomb threat at a Chase Bank branch in that city, located approximately 180 km north of Los Angeles. Several buildings in downtown Bakersfield, including the city hall and the local police station, were closed for a time due to the threat.
The identity of the suspect and the motives of the crime have not yet been disclosed, as the investigation is not yet complete.
