Tbilisi, June 2 /Sina Kua/ — On Tuesday, at the Alkalaki station in the Georgian region of Samtse-Javaeti, the official ceremony of opening the Baku — Tbilisi — Kars /BTK/ railway took place, which is a joint strategic project of Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Turkey.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze stated that the BTC project has historical significance and serves as a vivid example of strategic partnership and exemplary cooperation between Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Turkey.
I. Kobalidze noted the strategic importance of the project for the region and for the development of the Middle Corridor. According to him, since 2017, when the railway line began operating in test mode, more than 1.8 million tons of cargo and about 90 thousand containers have been transported along it.
“With the full commissioning, the railway’s capacity will reach 5 million tons per year, which will significantly increase the region’s transit capabilities and enhance the competitiveness of the Middle Corridor,” emphasized I. Kobayidze.
The Baku — Tbilisi — Kars railway was built in accordance with the Azerbaijan-Georgia-Turkey interstate agreement.—0—
