Almaty, June 1 /Xin Hua/ — Kazakhstan has expressed its readiness to provide technical assistance in good faith in resolving the issue of the enrichment of Iranian uranium, provided that corresponding international agreements are reached with all parties. This was reported on Monday by the news agency Interfax-Kazakhstan, citing the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan, Erlan Zhetybayev.
E. Zhetybayev emphasized that Kazakhstan is closely monitoring the situation around the Iranian nuclear program.
He explained that the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, pointed to the presence in Kazakhstan of a low-enriched uranium bank owned by the IAEA, which makes an important contribution to strengthening the global nuclear non-proliferation regime by providing an additional mechanism for guaranteed supplies of nuclear fuel for peaceful nuclear programs.
Earlier in an interview with the Financial Times, R. Grossi stated that Kazakhstan will express readiness to accept Iranian uranium reserves if Washington and Tehran reach an agreement on the Iranian nuclear program. According to the head of the IAEA, he discussed this possibility with the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev during a visit to Astana.
