Moscow, May 30 /Xin Hua/ — The President of Russia Vladimir Putin, the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, and the President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov on Friday published a joint statement. It notes the inexpediency of holding a nationwide referendum in the Republic of Armenia in “possibly a short time” on accession to the European Union (EU) or further stay within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
The text of the joint statement, published on the same day on the official Kremlin website, indicates that Armenia’s preparation to join the EU creates “significant risks” for the economic security of the EAEU member states. It also emphasizes the necessity of preventing the “associated” damage to the member states of the union.
The statement also made a decision that members of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council from Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, and Kyrgyzstan will report at the next meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council in December of this year on the “possible consequences” of suspending Armenia’s actions under the Treaty on the Eurasian Economic Union.
The 5th Eurasian Economic Forum was held from May 28 to 29 in the Kazakh capital Astana. Leaders of four countries made the above-mentioned joint statement at the forum field.
Armenian President Vaagn Khachaturyan in April 2025 approved the law “On the start of the process of Armenia’s accession to the European Union.” In May of that year, the first Armenia-EU summit was held in the capital of Armenia, Yerevan. Following the results of the first summit with Armenia, the EU supported further rapprochement and Armenia’s “European aspirations.” –0–
