China to Launch Third Nationwide Survey on Persons with Disabilities

Beijing, May 29 /Xin Hua/ — From June this year until December 2028, the third national sample survey among people with disabilities will be conducted in China, according to a statement released on the day by the General Office of the State Council of the PRC.

Let us remind you that the first and second similar examinations were conducted in 1987 and 2006, respectively.

The statement notes that the upcoming survey will cover a sample of approximately 2.87 million people nationwide. During the upcoming work, data will be collected on the main personal and family conditions of the survey participants, the disability status of persons with limited capabilities, the availability of disability certificates, living conditions, as well as on the receipt and demand for services providing assistance and support.

According to estimates by the China Disabled Persons’ Federation, by the end of 2010 there were approximately 85 million people with disabilities in the country. Of these, about 24.7 million had musculoskeletal disorders, 20.5 million had hearing problems, and 12.6 million had visual impairments. -0-
