Gaza, May 28 /Xinhua/ — The Palestinian movement HAMAS officially confirmed on Wednesday that the recently appointed commander of the “Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades” (the armed wing of the group), Muammar Ude, was killed as a result of an Israeli airstrike on Tuesday evening.
The deceased participated in Hamas’s military activities for more than 30 years and was among the pioneers of armed operations, according to a statement for the press.
M. Ude played a key role in planning, preparation, and military operations at various stages of the conflict between Israel and HAMAS, the statement notes.
HAMAS accused Israel of strikes with a “flagrant violation of all values, norms, laws and divine principles.” It is reported that during the shelling, the wife and two sons of M. Ude also died.
Earlier on Wednesday, Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that M. Ude, whom he called the fourth most senior figure in HAMAS, was killed. “We promised that HAMAS would not have military or civilian control over Gaza, and so it will be,” said I. Katz.
M. Ude headed the armed wing of Hamas about a week ago, replacing Izz al-Din al-Qaddad, who was killed as a result of an Israeli strike on May 15.
According to Israeli and Palestinian statements, since the beginning of the conflict between Israel and Hamas on October 7, 2023, Israel has killed a number of high-ranking military and political figures of the movement in Gaza and beyond.
