Dushanbe, May 28 /Xin Hua/ — The final stage of the International Decade of Action “Water for Sustainable Development” 2018-2028 should become a period of accelerated efforts, practical implementation of commitments, and strengthening of international cooperation. This was stated on Wednesday by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan, Sirojiddin Muhriddin.

Speaking at a special discussion panel dedicated to the key results of the International Decade of Action, the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recalled that almost ten years ago, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution initiated by Tajikistan proclaiming the Decade. According to him, this initiative reflected a common understanding that water is the most important condition for sustainable development, the fight against poverty, health care, and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

S. Musriddin noted that over the past years it has been possible to elevate the water agenda to a higher level of global attention, strengthen political will in the water sector, and expand the understanding of the role of water cooperation as an effective instrument of water diplomacy. He emphasized that today water is considered not only as a natural resource but also as a strategic factor of sustainability and international interaction.

According to the minister, the final review of the implementation of the Decade in 2028 should not be a formal event, but a defining stage for shaping the future global water agenda. Tajikistan proposed focusing on reducing the gap between commitments and implementation, increasing investments in water infrastructure and innovation, enhancing the role of science and digital technologies, as well as ensuring inclusive participation in decision-making. –0–
