New York, May 28 /Xinhua/ — The facts fully demonstrated that the relationship between China and Costa Rica corresponds to the long-term strategic interests of both countries and benefits both peoples. This was stated here on Wednesday by a member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, Minister of Foreign Affairs of China Wang Yi, during a meeting with Costa Rica’s Foreign Minister Manuel Tovar Rivera.
Noting that Costa Rica became the first country in Central America to establish diplomatic relations with the PRC in the 21st century, as well as the first state to establish a strategic partnership and sign a free trade agreement with China, Van I said that in Central America Costa Rica stands at the forefront of developing ties with China.
CN values the sequence and stability in its policy towards Costa Rica, emphasized the minister. Over 19 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, ties between the two countries have seen significant development, and bilateral practical cooperation has yielded rich results, he added.
Wan Yi stated that the Taiwan issue lies at the core of China’s fundamental interests. He expressed confidence that the new government of Costa Rica will continue to firmly adhere to the One China principle. According to the minister, China will always be a friend and partner whom Costa Rica can rely on. Costa Rica will continue to strengthen cooperation with China, which is one of the perspectives of South-South interaction, aimed at facilitating the acceleration of the country’s modernization process, Wan Yi noted.
M. T. Rivera noted that Costa Rica firmly adheres to the One China policy, and thanked China for the support and assistance in the country’s socio-economic development.
The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Costa Rica reminded that next year will mark the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. According to him, Costa Rica is ready to take advantage of this opportunity to strengthen political trust and practical cooperation with China in order to bring bilateral relations to a new level.
Costa Rica deeply recognizes the importance of the UN and intends to join forces with China to support multilateralism and the protection of global peace and development, concluded M. T. Rivero.
