Beijing, May 28 /Xinhua/ — China is currently conducting negotiations with the European Union /EU/ within the framework of the World Trade Organization regarding the EU’s plan to introduce new steel tariffs starting July 1 this year, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said on Thursday.

An official representative of the Ministry of Commerce of the PRC, Ya Dun, made this statement at another departmental press conference in response to a relevant question, noting that the actions of the EU essentially constitute a manifestation of trade protectionism, which not only does not contribute to strengthening the competitiveness of its steel industry, but will also lead to a serious disruption of steel trade between China and the EU, as well as affect the stability of global production and supply chains.

China hopes to achieve mutually beneficial results through negotiations, thereby contributing to the stable and healthy development of trade and economic ties between China and the EU, added He Yadun.

In the event of discrimination by the EU against Chinese companies and goods, China will take appropriate measures for the resolute protection of its lawful rights and interests, an official representative stated. -0-
