On May 27, Russia celebrates the All-Russian Library Day – a professional holiday for librarians, bibliographers, and all specialists dedicated to the preservation and development of book culture. The holiday was established by a decree of the President of the Russian Federation in 1995 and is timed to coincide with the anniversary of the founding of the first state public library in Russia – the Imperial Public Library, now the Russian National Library.
The scientific and technical library of SPbGASU is considered one of the oldest university libraries in Russia. Its history is inextricably linked with the history of the university and begins in 1832 — the year of the founding of the School of Civil Engineers.
Today, NTB SPBGASU is a modern multidisciplinary space for education, scientific work, and self-realization of students, teachers, and researchers. The collection includes about one million publications on construction, architecture, and related disciplines. Electronic resources, full-text databases, and digital services are being actively developed.
Rare editions and archival materials from the 19th–20th centuries dedicated to architecture, construction art, and engineering represent particular value. The library not only provides informational resources for the educational process and supports the university’s scientific research activities, but also conducts active exhibition and educational activities. Here, regular thematic book exhibitions, presentations of new acquisitions, and events dedicated to memorable dates, the history of domestic science, and culture are held.
Traditionally, exhibitions of rare editions and unique projects of architects of the 19th–20th centuries are organized for the All-Russian Library Day in the reading room. This year, an exhibition “Engineer on the Imperial Throne of Russia”, dedicated to the 230th anniversary of the birth of Emperor Nicholas I, who signed the decree in 1832 on the establishment of the first specialized educational institution of the Russian Empire for the training of civil engineer-builders, is presented to the readers.
