Los Angeles, May 23 /Xin Hua/ — California Governor Gavin Newsom on Saturday declared a state of emergency in Orange County, while emergency services conducted work to eliminate a leak of volatile industrial chemicals at an aerospace technology manufacturing facility in the city of Garden Grove.

“The safety of the residents of Orange County is the top priority,” G. Newsom said in his statement, adding that California is deploying all available resources to provide support to rescuers and affected communities.

This emergency decree allows the state to mobilize additional resources and accelerate the coordination of actions of local, state, and federal agencies involved in resolving the crisis situation at the GKN Aerospace plant in Garden Grove, where for several days the temperature in a reservoir containing methyl methacrylate/MMA, a highly flammable industrial chemical used in the production of acrylic plastics and the aerospace industry, has remained unstable.

The situation has become even more critical, as the temperature inside the damaged reservoir continues to rise: it has reached approximately 90 degrees Fahrenheit / 32.22 degrees Celsius / compared to 77 degrees Fahrenheit / 25 degrees Celsius / earlier in the day.

Fire service representatives warned that in connection with the increasing heat, two main scenarios of event development are possible: the reservoir may rupture, leading to the leakage of toxic chemicals, or it may explode, which could cause the rupture of other chemically hazardous reservoirs located nearby. –0–
