Los Angeles, May 21 /Xin Hua/ — The American private space company SpaceX on Thursday canceled the 12th test flight of the Starship rocket due to a technical malfunction.
The launch from the Starbase cosmodrome in Texas, initially scheduled for 18:30 Central Daylight Time / 23:30 Greenwich Mean Time, was stopped 40 seconds before liftoff. Later, SpaceX announced its cancellation.
SpaceX founder Elon Musk said on the social network X that the launch was canceled because the hydraulic pin used to secure the launch tower manipulator did not disengage normally. If the problem can be resolved overnight, the next launch attempt may take place on Friday at 5:30 PM Central North American Time, he added.
SpaceX intends to launch the debut flight of the Starship spacecraft and the new-generation Super Heavy launch vehicle, equipped with a modernized version of the Raptor engine. The launch is planned from a new pad at the Starbase cosmodrome.
As stated by SpaceX, the main goal of the test flight is to evaluate for the first time the effectiveness of this modernized system in real conditions.
