On May 22, Biological Diversity Day is traditionally celebrated worldwide. The thematic day is intended to draw attention to issues related to the loss of species diversity of flora and fauna.

Environmental protection is an integral part of the corporate culture and social responsibility of NK “Rosneft”. The company implements large-scale programs in the regions of its presence for the restoration of natural resources, the study of rare animals, plants, and the preservation of biodiversity. Research is conducted in cooperation with leading scientific institutes of the country.

Since 2012, Rosneft has been implementing the largest program since Soviet times for the study of the flora and fauna of the Arctic. During this time, more than 60 expeditions have been conducted. The habitats have been studied in detail and more than 400 animals have been surveyed, over 140 individuals have been fitted with satellite transmitters, and about 1,500 laboratory analyses of collected biological samples have been carried out.

A new cycle of the corporate program for monitoring the biodiversity of Arctic ecosystems called “Tamur” started in 2024 and is planned until 2027. Scientists are conducting studies of the Kara subpopulation of polar bears, wild reindeer, as well as valuable species of birds and fish in the north of Krasnoyarsk Krai. A total of 10 expeditions are planned within the program.

Rosneft pays special attention to the study of the polar bear. The company has been conducting expeditions for monitoring and studying the polar bear population since 2014. During this time, 10 large-scale scientific expeditions have been carried out. In 2025, scientists conducted a full-scale aerial survey of the Kara subpopulation of polar bears for the first time.

Studies of the wild reindeer population in the Krasnoyarsk Territory have been conducted since 2014. With the support of Rosneft, large-scale ground and aviation animal censuses have been carried out in the territory of Evenkia and Taimyr. Using satellite tags installed on the reindeer, scientists tracked the complete annual cycle and migration, as well as identified seasonal behavioral features.

Since 2015, Rosneft has been supporting research on the population of the Atlantic walrus. During this time, work has been carried out in the territory of the Nenets State Nature Reserve, in the waters of the Kara and Laptev Seas, as well as in the Barents Sea. During the expeditions, more than 200 biological samples were collected and analyzed, 26 animals were fitted with satellite transmitters. The obtained data filled existing gaps in scientific knowledge.

Rosneft supports programs for the study and conservation of the Amur tiger population, implemented by the Autonomous Nonprofit Organization “Center for the Amur Tiger”. The company’s funds are directed towards developing a comprehensive system for the conservation of the Amur tiger, including the protection of specially conserved natural territories, equipping operational anti-poaching groups with modern technology and equipment for combating poachers, as well as conserving the feeding base and reducing conflict situations between tigers and humans. Joint efforts have made it possible to increase the Amur tiger population to 750 individuals.

With the support of the specialists from the State Natural Reserve “Central Siberian,” they are studying the habitat of the kabarga. In the course of the research, the presence was confirmed in an area previously considered unsuitable for this rare species, and the population size was also estimated—about 300 individuals.

Since 1997, Rosneft has been a participant in the monitoring program of the Okhotsk population of the gray whale, in the framework of which the annual accounting of its numbers is carried out, observations of the animals’ behavior, as well as the study of their feeding grounds, photo-identification studies and acoustic monitoring are conducted. Within the research, specialists have concluded that the annual increase of the Okhotsk population of gray whales is about 5%. At the same time, in 2025, the total number of whales registered in the program’s photo catalog reached almost 400 individuals.

The company also contributes to the study of muskoxen. In 2024, scientists from the Siberian Federal University, with the participation of Rosneft, conducted a comprehensive census of muskoxen in the western part of Taimyr. The total length of water and air routes exceeded 12 thousand km.

Moreover, Rosneft’s contribution allows for the conservation of the population of the white-tailed eagle in the Samara region and the Steller’s sea eagle in the Khabarovsk Territory.

In 2022-2024, scientists from the Siberian Federal University analyzed the status of the wolf population in the Evenki district of Krasnoyarsk Krai. The result of the research was a set of specialist recommendations for improving the regulation of predator numbers to maintain the balance of the ecosystem.

In 2025, the Company expanded its work on the preservation of rare animal species, taking under its care a foal of the only semi-wild population of the Przewalski’s horse in Russia. Rosneft supports the state natural reserve “Orenburgsky” and the Przewalski’s Horse Reintroduction Center. This cooperation contributes to improving the conditions of keeping, feeding, and veterinary care of the animals, as well as further studying the endangered species.

Taking into account many years of experience in research and projects on biodiversity conservation, as well as the accumulated scientific data on the Company’s ecology, a standard corporate program for biodiversity conservation was developed in 2025 throughout the region of presence. Scientists have formed a priority and comprehensive list of significant species – biological indicators of marine and terrestrial mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles, fish, terrestrial invertebrates, zoo- and phytoplankton, terrestrial plants with descriptions of each species-bioindicator.
