Nanjing, May 22 /Xin Hua/ – On Friday, a meeting of trade ministers of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) opened in the city of Suzhou, Jiangsu Province in eastern China. /XINHUA/.

The main topic of the meeting was “Formation of the Asia-Pacific community and promotion of common prosperity.” During the two-day meeting, a number of priority issues will be discussed, including regional economic integration, support for the World Trade Organization, cooperation in the digital sphere, and the “green” economy.

The agenda of the event also includes discussion of macroeconomic issues, such as economic management and practical cooperation in new and promising areas, representing a general interest for all parties.

As noted by ASEAN Minister of Commerce Van Ventao, the meeting of ASEAN trade ministers is intended to prepare for an informal meeting of ASEAN economic leaders and serves as a barometer of trends in trade and economic policy both in the Asia-Pacific region and worldwide.

Van Wenthau noted that the current international situation is undergoing changes and upheavals, geopolitical turbulence is intensifying, and unilateralism and protectionism are gaining momentum. Against this backdrop, the global trade and economic order is facing serious challenges, while development in the Asia-Pacific region and worldwide is subjected to negative impacts.

Under such conditions, all parties place great hopes on the above-mentioned meeting in terms of reaching consensus and obtaining concrete results, Van Wentao added.

Over the past 35 years since joining APEC, China has remained a firm supporter of this organization, making an important contribution to its development, as well as an active initiator and promoter in the sphere of trade and economic cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region, added the minister.

According to Wang Wentao, China will continue to expand openness at a high level and strive for mutually beneficial cooperation to give a strong impetus to economic development throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

China will continue to adhere to the principles of openness and interconnectedness and will work on building an open economy in the Asia-Pacific region, the minister continued, adding that the country will adhere to the principle of ensuring its own development while simultaneously benefiting others and creating new opportunities for the Asia-Pacific region and the whole world thanks to new achievements in the process of advancing Chinese modernization.
