Saint Petersburg, May 21 /Xinhua/ — In recent years, cooperation between Russia and China in the field of biodiversity conservation has reached a new level. This was stated recently in an interview with Xinhua by Professor Alexander Alekseev of the Saint Petersburg State Forestry University (SPbSUFT).
“The corresponding agreements were approved at the meeting of the chairmen of the governments of our countries and are one of the directions for further deepening of relations of comprehensive partnership and strategic interaction,” the Russian expert indicated.
In September 2025, the China-Russia Center for Biodiversity Research was established. At the same time, in Harbin /Heilongjiang Province, Northeast China/, the first China-Russia symposium dedicated to this topic took place. Plans for joint research were outlined at it, working groups were created, and future joint events were planned.
“In China, great attention is paid to the study and preservation of biological diversity at the highest political level. Large scientific research projects and practical programs are being implemented, including in cooperation with Russia,” noted A. Alekseev. Thus, at a meeting of the heads of government of the two countries, plans for joint activities on the conservation of populations of such animals as the Amur tiger, snow leopard, Far Eastern leopard, and Przewalski’s horse were approved. Also planned is the development of a cooperation program in the field of nature reserves and national parks.
“China’s experience with the problems of studying and preserving biodiversity can serve as a good example for all countries in the world,” believes a professor of SPbSUT.
