Saint Petersburg State Polytechnic University of Peter the Great is traditionally one of the main venues for holding all-Russian and industry-specific Olympiads for schoolchildren and students. The completed Olympiad season of the 2025/2026 academic year became one of the largest: the final stages covered a wide range of fields — from fundamental mathematics and physics to engineering sciences and biotechnology.

This year, Politec became the venue for the regional stage of the All-Russian Schoolchildren’s Physics Olympiad for Saint Petersburg and the Leningrad region. The large-scale competition brought together young physicists from two regions.

At the final stage of the Polytechnic Olympiad in the “Engineering Sciences” profile, about 800 school students from all over Russia participated. In this season, the competition took place in an updated format. The organizers added elements to the tasks reflecting modern trends in industry and research. The concept of the tasks was revised towards enhancing interdisciplinarity and practice-orientedness: participants were offered not abstract examples, but engineering cases close to real production challenges.Such an approach is designed not only to assess the level of students’ knowledge but also to identify their ability for systemic thinking and seeking non-standard solutions.

The All-Russian Tolstoy Olympiad aroused great interest among schoolchildren. Its final stages at the Polytechnic were dedicated to literature, history, social studies, biology, law, computer science, and pedagogy. The leader in terms of the number of finalists was the “Social Studies” profile — 269 schoolchildren came to the in-person defense. These numbers testify to a high level of training and a significant interest in socio-economic and humanitarian specialties that can be obtained at the Polytechnic.

Profile Olympiads for future engineers were held with the support of PJSC “Gazprom.” The finals in physics and engineering were held at SPbPU. By the way, the Polytechnic University is the developer of tasks for the profiles “Engineering” and “Physics.”

A key feature of the final stage of the “Technocup” olympiad in the “Programming” profile, involving 22 schoolchildren, was the use of import-substituted software. This allowed not only holding the competition on modern domestic software but also popularizing it among talented schoolchildren, future IT specialists.

In addition, the finals of the multidisciplinary engineering Olympiad “Zvezda” in 16 directions, the interuniversity Olympiad for schoolchildren (OMMO) in mathematics, and the Olympiad “Electronic Nanoworld” were held at the university.

Most of the listed olympiads are included in the list of school olympiads approved by the Russian School Olympiad Council (RSOSh). This grants winners and prize-winners the right to special conditions when entering universities in Russia. At the St. Petersburg Peter the Great Polytechnic University, diplomas from such olympiads grant the right to admission without entrance examinations (BVI) or are counted as the highest result in entrance examinations (100 points). Specific benefits depend on the level of the olympiad, its profile, and the field of study.Up-to-date information about the profiles of olympiads and training directions can be found on the official SPbPU website in the section “Admission without entrance exams.”

The 2025/2026 Olympic season at SPbPU ended with impressive results. More than 1500 schoolchildren took part in the final stage of all the olympiads held at the university. On May 16, a solemn award ceremony for the winners and prize-winners took place. The kids received diplomas, also participated in useful interactive activities, and were able to learn more about the Polytechnic campus during the excursion.

A large number of finalists confirms the status of Polytechnic as one of the leading centers of attraction for talented and motivated youth. Polytechnic will continue to develop the Olympiad movement, attracting partners and improving knowledge assessment methods so that each participant can reveal their potential.
