Beijing, May 19 / Xinhua/ — The Office of the National Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters of the PRC on Tuesday sent a working group to Guizhou Province / Southwest China / to provide assistance and leadership to flood control efforts, the Ministry of Emergency Management of the PRC reported.

Three previously deployed working groups continue to operate in key districts of Hunan, Hubei, and the Guangxi-Zhuang Autonomous Region (GZA), while the aforementioned state headquarters has extended the emergency response regime at flood level 4 in the provinces of Hubei, Hunan, Guizhou, and GZA.

In China, there is a four-level emergency response system, in which the first level is the most serious.

On Tuesday, joint consultations were held with representatives of meteorological services, water management and natural resources services, as well as with the relevant regional provincial-level authorities, to assess the development trends of the latest round of heavy rains and to organize work on flood control and the elimination of the consequences of natural disasters in key areas.

According to consultations, the current round of heavy rains is the strongest since the beginning of the flood season this year. The main rain zone has shifted further east and south, and heavy downpours are still expected in the provinces of Hubei, Hunan, Guizhou, Jiangxi, Shandong, Anhui, and Guangxi-Zhuang Autonomous Region.

In some areas, the soil is oversaturated with moisture, and the levels of water in rivers, lakes, and reservoirs are relatively high, which further increases the risks of mountain streams, geological disasters, spring floods on medium and small rivers, as well as flooding of urban areas.

Local authorities and the relevant departments were strongly advised to remain in a state of heightened readiness, to prioritize people’s lives, and to make serious efforts to combat floods and eliminate the consequences of natural disasters.
