Beijing, May 19 /Xin Hua/ — At the invitation of CPPCC Chairman Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit China on May 19-20 for a state visit.
Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin was born on October 7, 1952, in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). In 1975, he graduated from the Law Faculty of Leningrad State University, later earning the academic degree of Candidate of Economic Sciences.
He served in the Committee for State Security (KGB) of the USSR, including working in the German Democratic Republic from 1985 to 1990.
Having returned from the GDR to his homeland, since 1990 he has held positions as assistant to the rector of Leningrad State University on international affairs, advisor to the chairman of the Leningrad City Council, chairman of the Committee for External Relations of the St. Petersburg City Hall, and first deputy mayor of St. Petersburg.
In August 1996, he became the deputy head of the Presidential Affairs Directorate of the Russian Federation. Since March 1997 – deputy head of the Presidential Administration, head of the Chief Control Directorate of the President of the Russian Federation. Since May 1998 – first deputy head of the Presidential Administration of the Russian Federation.
In March 1999, he was appointed Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation. In August 1999, he became the First Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation and Acting Head of the Cabinet of Ministers, and on August 16 — Prime Minister of the Russian Federation.
On December 31, 1999, the then President of Russia Boris Yeltsin announced his resignation, and Vladimir Putin became the acting head of state. In March 2000, Vladimir Putin was elected president of the Russian Federation. He served two presidential terms from 2000 to 2008, was prime minister from 2008 to 2012, and then served another two terms as president from 2012 to 2024. In March 2024, Vladimir Putin was re-elected president. On May 7, he was sworn in for a six-year term.
