On Youth Day in China, a list of youth representatives awarded the “May 4” medal and the “Youth Pioneer in the New Era” was announced. Among the laureates of the “Youth Pioneer in the New Era” award is a “master of animal husbandry,” but upon meeting him in person, a striking fact emerges: this master has no hands.
Zhou Shaofu was born in 1994. A tragic childhood accident deprived him of both hands but did not break his spirit: he joined a swimming team for people with disabilities and won 13 awards at national and provincial swimming competitions among athletes with limited abilities.
In 2017, Zhou Shaofu ended his sports career and returned to his hometown Laocao in Cizishui County, Ziyang Province. Being entrepreneurial, he decided to start his own business and founded a livestock cooperative. Over several years, he learned skillfully to use his legs for feeding, distributing feed, sorting, driving ducks, keeping accounts, and working with a mobile phone, as well as performing tasks such as transporting and delivering goods with the help of his mouth and shoulders.Currently, he leases about 800 mu (about 53 hectares) of agricultural land, annually raising between 80,000 and 150,000 heads of meat ducks and geese, and the annual income consistently exceeds 300,000 yuan.
After the livestock cooperative got on its feet, Zhou Shaofu began to help other people with disabilities. His cooperative regularly employs people with disabilities, and he himself joined a local entrepreneurs’ association that helps people with limited abilities, as well as a young volunteers association where residents of the village freely share technologies for poultry breeding and experience in conducting e-commerce.
He says: “Under no circumstances give up, but act, break through and fight, as long as you have strength — do everything in your power to help as many people as possible.”
