Beijing, May 17 /Xin Hua/ — China is facilitating the direction of negotiations on the WHO Agreement to combat pandemics in a practical and realistic manner, the State Administration for Disease Control and Prevention of the PRC stated ahead of the 79th session of the World Health Assembly /WHA/, which will open on Monday in Geneva.
The Chinese delegation will participate in the WHA session, which is the highest body of the World Health Organization (WHO).
After the adoption of the foundational text of the Agreement on pandemic preparedness at the 78th WHA session last year, WHO established an intergovernmental working group to negotiate the annex contained in paragraph 12 of the Agreement, relating to systems for the joint use of pathogens and vaccines.
In accordance with the working group’s schedule, negotiations on the application can be extended until the 80th session of the IAEA.
The Chinese side is actively participating in the entire negotiation process, adhering to a scientifically grounded approach and paying special attention to key issues, including access to pathogens and the joint exchange of pathogens and medical products derived from them—vaccines, medicines, and diagnostic tests, technology transfer, intellectual property, strengthening potential and financing, the administration stated, adding that China will continue to put forward practical proposals during the course of the negotiations.
As stated by the department’s responsible representative, during the negotiations China consistently adhered to the principles of multilateral cooperation, supporting the WHO in fulfilling its coordinating role and adhering to the principles of scientific validity, fairness, and impartiality.
China, according to its words, actively expressed its point of view on key issues and put forward scientifically grounded, reasonable, and feasible proposals, which allowed overcoming disagreements between parties and steadily advancing negotiations towards practically achievable results. -0-
