Beijing, May 15 /Xinhua/ — The development of the service sector is not only a choice driven by current trends, but also a step that meets the demands of industry, as well as the expectations of the public, noted official Li Chunfan of the State Committee for Development and Reform of the PRC during the latest episode of the multimedia discussion program “China Economic Roundtable,” organized by Xinhua News Agency.

Official data confirms the growing importance of the service sector. In the first quarter of the current year, its added value amounted to 61.7 percent of the country’s GDP, and its contribution to overall economic growth reached 63.2 percent. This confirms the sector’s status as the most important pillar of the national economy.

In April, a national conference dedicated to the development of the service sector was held in Beijing; moreover, the State Council of the PRC published guiding principles aimed at expanding potential and improving the quality of services.

Li Chunfan used a vivid metaphor to explain the tasks set. She noted that the “increase in pie size” is aimed at growing volumes and expanding the sector’s production capacities, while “improving quality” refers to optimizing the structure and raising the level of development, which will allow the sector to become more substantive in essence and elevate it to a higher level.

In the context of strengthening the services sector for business, Li Chunfan identified six priority directions: technological services, modern logistics, software and information services, supply chain financing, energy-saving and environmental services, as well as comprehensive business services.

Regarding consumer services, Liu Tao, Deputy Director of the Institute of Market Economy of the Development Issues Center under the CPC State Council, emphasized the necessity of ensuring high-quality, diversified, and convenient development of the industry. In his opinion, the key directions include: expanding the offer of high-quality household and retail services, creating a well-structured and effective system of services at the microdistrict level, increasing the accessibility of services for the elderly and children, strengthening the professional potential of the healthcare sector, as well as modernizing models for providing cultural, tourist, and sports services with the aim of transitioning to higher quality, based on experience and smart development.

“Constantly expanding openness in the service sector allows us to implement the best global practices and management approaches, raise professional and international industry standards. This also contributes to the accelerated formation of recognizable brands under the common name ‘Chinese Services’,” noted Zhang Chenchen, Chairman of the Board of the Chinese company “Roffar Elderly Service Co.”. -0-
