London, May 15 /Xinhua/ — Chinese-made electric vehicles are becoming increasingly noticeable in the British market. This was stated on Thursday in a written interview with the Xinhua news agency by David Bailey, professor of entrepreneurship economics at the University of Birmingham.

“Chinese brands have clearly transformed from secondary players into main competitors in the British market,” said D. Bailey.

Data from the British Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) showed that the share of Chinese cars in the British electric vehicle market grew in the first four months of 2026.

According to SMMT’s calculations, Chinese brands, including BYD and Jaecoo, sold 30,480 electric vehicles in the UK from January to April, which accounts for 17.4 percent of the total number of electric vehicles sold during this period. Considering brands owned by Chinese companies, such as Volvo, Polestar, and Lotus, the total number of electric vehicles sold amounts to 40,222 — 22.7 percent of all electric vehicles sold in the UK in the first four months of the year.

D. Bailey noted that Chinese manufacturers are strong in aspects such as electric vehicle technologies, battery production, and product development, and also offer consumers a wider choice in the market.

“Consumers increasingly consider [products] reliable rather than just cheap. In particular, Chinese electric vehicles often use excellent battery technologies,” he said.

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers are now competitive not only due to affordability, but also because of driving range, software, and design, the expert added.

“Overall, the global automobile industry is experiencing the biggest shift in power centers in the last decades. China does not just export cars; it exports the entire ecosystem of electric vehicles,” he emphasized.

According to D. Bailey, there is potential for expanding cooperation between British and Chinese electric vehicle companies in areas such as investment and production. –0–
