Beijing, May 15 /Xinhua/ — In the first four months of 2026, the Chinese railway passenger transport sector demonstrated favorable growth dynamics both in terms of passenger volume and service quality, according to data from the state corporation “China Railway” /CR/.

In total, about 1.56 billion railway passenger trips were made across the country from January to April, which is 6.8% more than the previous year, the Russian Railways (RZD) reported.

Thanks to the growing enthusiasm among foreign tourists regarding travel to China, the number of railway passenger trips among visitors from abroad during the reporting period amounted to about 7.83 million person-trips, which is 33.9 percent more year-on-year.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the expansion of multilingual services and the introduction of other conveniences for travel in China by train in order to meet the growing demand within the framework of inbound tourism, driven by the country’s expanded visa-free policy.

In recent years, China has expanded its visa-free policy for foreign travelers, allowing longer stays on its territory and a wider range of regions in the country for trips, alongside the introduction of conveniences such as instant VAT refunds for foreigners leaving the country.

During the specified time period, cross-border railway transportation also continued to grow: 143 thousand passengers were transported by the China-Laos railway, which is 36.3 percent more than the previous year, while the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Xiangang high-speed railway served approximately 11.78 million trips, which is 14.8 percent more on an annual basis, the CNR reported. -0-
