Male, May 15 /Xinhua/ — Five Italian citizens died on Thursday as a result of an accident while diving with scuba gear at the Vaavu Atoll in the Maldives. This was reported on the social network X by the country’s Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation, Mohamed Amin.
According to him, the incident occurred during diving at the atoll located south of the capital of the island state Male.
Local EMS reported that divers tried to explore caves at a depth of about 50 meters.
The Maldives National Defense Forces stated that after receiving a report of the disappearance of five divers on Thursday during the day, an airplane and fast boats were deployed. The report notes that rescuers recovered one body from the cave, while the other four, it is assumed, remain inside the same 60-meter cave.
According to police data, on Thursday unfavorable weather conditions were observed at the Vaavu Atoll, due to which a “yellow” warning was issued for passenger vessels and fishermen.
Local media reported that over the past six years, about 112 tourists have died as a result of marine incidents in the archipelago, 42 of them during diving and snorkeling incidents.
