San Francisco, May 14 /Xin Hua/ — The US Senate on Wednesday narrowly rejected a resolution initiated by the Democrats calling for the cessation of military actions against Iran, which had not been sanctioned by Congress.
Lawmakers rejected the document by 50 votes to 49. Three Republican senators — Rand Paul, Susan Collins, and Lisa Murkowski — voted together with the majority of Democrats in support of the document. The only Democrat who voted against the resolution was Jon Fetterman.
This is the first vote in the Senate since May 1, when the 60-day period for conducting a military operation, initiated by the USA and Israel against Iran on February 28 without the consent of lawmakers, expired. The American administration stated that the cessation of fire “put an end” to the war against Iran.
The resolution states that Congress did not declare war on Iran and did not grant specific legislative permission for the use of military force on the territory of that country or against it. The document obliges the president to cease hostilities unless they are expressly authorized by a declaration of war or specific permission to use military force.
In accordance with the War Powers Resolution of 1973, the President of the United States must terminate the use of the US Armed Forces within 60 calendar days, except in cases when Congress has declared war, issued a special authorization, legislatively extended the 60-day period, or when he is unable to assemble due to an armed attack on the United States. Under certain conditions of war necessity, the 60-day term may be extended by an additional 30 days. –0–
