Against the background of another round of direct negotiations between Lebanon and Israel, taking place in Washington, the UN expressed hope that the initiated dialogue will help achieve an effective and sustainable ceasefire and open the way to long-term peace.
The situation on the ground, meanwhile, remains extremely unstable. UN interim forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL) continue to record significant aerial and ground activity throughout their area of responsibility. On the eve, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) carried out several air strikes in the “West” and “East” sectors.
The mission reported 455 cases of shelling from the side of TSKHAL and six shells fired by Lebanese non-state armed groups. The peacekeepers also recorded three missile launches over the zone of responsibility of the UNIFIL.
Meanwhile, a series of drone strikes on vehicles in the Jiyyeh area, approximately 20 kilometers south of Beirut, on Wednesday resulted in the deaths of at least eight people, including two children, according to Lebanese authorities.
Against the backdrop of a worsening security situation, the number of internally displaced persons is once again rising across the country. This morning, the Israeli command issued evacuation orders for eight villages in southern Lebanon and in the Bekaa region. Currently, nearly 130,000 Lebanese people are taking shelter in 632 collective centers. The scale of destruction and the risk of shelling do not allow for the safe return of people to their homes.
Humanitarian access remains limited, especially in the south of the country: its restoration is hindered by damaged roads and bridges, unexploded ordnance, and ongoing hostilities.
