Riga, May 14 /Xinhua/ — Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina on Thursday announced that she will resign after the collapse of the country’s three-party coalition government.
The announcement was made the next day after the “Progressives” party called on President Edgars Rinkēvičs to begin consultations on the formation of a new government, stating that the cabinet headed by E. Siliņa had lost its ability to function. The party declared that in the current situation there are two options remaining: the resignation of the prime minister or a vote of confidence in parliament.
After negotiations with the “progressives” on Wednesday, E. Silin declared that she had proposed to continue the work of the coalition, but the party responded that the coalition led by “New Unity” no longer enjoys any support or benefit.
The “Union of Greens and Farmers” also stated on Wednesday that the refusal of the “progressives” to provide support has effectively led to the collapse of the government, adding that the new government will be beneficial for the country. –0–
