The Far Eastern stork has been included in the list of endangered animals of the first category in China and classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as a species threatened with extinction. For many years, China has used various methods such as the installation of artificial nests and the creation of conservation networks to continuously assist in the restoration and conservation of wild populations of this species.

Zhu Baoguan, an expert in cranes and the study of the Far Eastern crane in China, head of the scientific research and education department of the Hunsu Nature Reserve Administration in Heilongjiang Province, said: “The global population of the Far Eastern crane, a globally endangered species, continues to grow. In 2020, there were slightly more than 3,000 individuals worldwide, and according to forecasts, by 2025 this number will approach 15,000. At the same time, the range and nesting sites are expanding, and cranes can increasingly be seen in wetland areas, with new nesting sites constantly being discovered.”

To strengthen the coordinated protection of the Far Eastern stork, in December 2025, at the initiative of the state nature reserve Khunshe, the first “United Network of Far Eastern Stork Reserves” was officially created in China. The network currently covers 5 provinces, including Heilongjiang, Jiangxi, and Jiangsu, and unites 13 participating organizations. On March 15 of this year, the network of reserves conducted its first synchronized inspection. In the future, it is planned to conduct similar studies of bird migration in spring and autumn, as well as nesting studies and special training for staff.

In the field of international cooperation, the Hunchun State Nature Reserve in Heilongjiang Province and the Bastak State Reserve in the Jewish Autonomous Region of Russia have been engaged for 12 years in Chinese-Russian international cooperation on transboundary especially protected natural territories, jointly promoting the transboundary habitat of the Far Eastern stork and other animal species. This year, Chinese experts visited the Russian reserve to exchange experience in methods of field construction and assessment of artificial nests for the Far Eastern stork. In addition, in 2025, an expert group on the Far Eastern stork was restored in the Russian Far East, which has already established contacts with the Chinese network of reserves for joint work on the global study and conservation of the Far Eastern stork population.
