Washington, May 12 /Xin Hua/ — U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he intends to suspend the federal gasoline tax due to rising fuel prices in connection with the American-Iranian war. This was reported by the CNN television channel.
Journalists note that such a measure requires the approval of Congress, which has never before agreed to suspend the federal fuel tax, despite similar calls during previous periods of sharp price increases. In 2022, Congress, controlled by the Democrats, rejected the request of then-President Joseph Biden to suspend tax collection.
Gasoline prices have risen on average nationwide to $4.52 per gallon / $1.19 per liter. Before the conflict began on February 28, they were $2.98 per gallon / $0.79 per liter.
The federal excise tax amounts to 18.4 cents per gallon / 4.9 cents per liter of gasoline and 24.4 cents per gallon / 6.4 cents per liter of diesel. However, the suspension of the federal tax will not greatly ease the burden on drivers. As CNN notes, the economy of retailers and other participants in the supply chain does not fully transfer to consumers.
