Washington, May 11 /Xinhua/ — American military have intensified reconnaissance flights near the coast of Cuba. This was reported on Monday by the CNN channel.

As noted in the report based on the analysis of publicly available data from the FlightRadar24 service, since February 4, the US Navy and Air Force have made no fewer than 25 flights. Most of them took place near Havana and Santiago de Cuba, with some aircraft approaching the coast at a distance of less than 64 km.

In this mission, primarily maritime patrol aircraft P-8A Poseidon were involved, designed for observation and reconnaissance. Some of the flights were carried out by other types of aircraft and drones specializing in radar reconnaissance and high-altitude aerial photography.

CNN calls the increase in flights a new phenomenon and notes, citing data collected by the resource adsb.exposed, that historically data on airplanes and drones were used in other places.

A sharp increase in the number of flights occurred against the backdrop of the tightening rhetoric of US President Donald Trump towards Cuba.

In January, he published on the social network Truth Social a comment by Fox News commentator Mark Thiessen, which claimed that the president would visit the “Freeport” before leaving his post. Just a few days after this, D. Trump issued an order on the oil blockade of Cuba.

Last week, the United States imposed new sanctions against key economic entities of Cuba, including a Cuban-Canadian joint venture in the mining sector and a business conglomerate under Cuban military management. The American side claims that these entities pose a threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States.

As CNN notes, similar trends were observed in the run-up to U.S. military operations in Venezuela and Iran: in both cases, the escalation of American rhetoric coincided with an increase in reconnaissance flights, recorded by open sources.

The Pentagon refused to comment on the information gathered by CNN. The channel also sent a request to the Cuban government.
