Islamabad, May 10 /Sin Hua/ — At least 12 police officers were killed and several others wounded after a suicide bomber rammed a police checkpoint with a car loaded with explosives in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province in northwest Pakistan, official sources reported on Sunday.
An incident occurred in the Bannu district on Saturday at 20:55 local time / 15:55 GMT. The police station was completely destroyed, sources told the Xinhua agency on condition of anonymity.
Rescue teams, supported by heavy machinery, continue clearing the debris. Authorities fear that bodies of the deceased may still be under the rubble.
According to the sappers’ assessments, between 1200 and 1500 kg of explosives were used in the attack, added the sources.
A militant group known as “Itti ad-Da al-Mujahidin Pakistan” /IMP/ has taken responsibility for the explosion.
Several attacks by militants have occurred in the northwestern regions of the country, bordering Afghanistan, in recent months, specifically targeting security service personnel and law enforcement agencies.
