From April 15 to May 5, the 139th China Import and Export Fair (Canton Fair) was held. It was attended by 314 thousand foreign buyers from 220 countries and regions of the world, which is 1.1% more compared to the 138th fair. Such indicators as the total number of foreign buyers and the number of the largest purchasers surpassed previous sessions, indicating a confident and favorable start to China’s foreign trade in the first year of the 15th five-year plan.

The total exhibition area of the 139th Canton Fair amounted to 1.55 million square meters, the total number of booths was 75.7 thousand, the number of participating companies exceeded 32 thousand — all these figures surpassed the levels of previous fairs. The fair was attended by 407 leading purchasing companies and 154 foreign trade and industrial organizations. The preliminary volume of export contracts concluded on site reached 25.7 billion US dollars, many buyers have already signed up for subsequent factory visits.

From the traditional markets of Europe and the USA to the new markets of the Middle East, South America, and Southeast Asia—the “circle of friends” of the Canton Fair is expanding, highlighting the trend of diversification of Chinese foreign trade markets.

At the current Canton Fair, foreign buyers “had their eyes dazzled” by a wide assortment of advanced technological products. Among them are exoskeleton robots that help people with limited mobility to stand and walk, delivery robots, the latest drone models, domestic premium-class displays, and much more.

At the 139th Canton Fair, the number of high-quality enterprises with the statuses “specialized and innovative” and “champions in their category” exceeded 11,000, which is higher than the figures of previous years; among more than 4.65 million presented samples, the share of new products, “green” products, and products with independent intellectual property rights amounted to 23%, 22%, and 25%, respectively. Nine specialized zones created for the first time attracted visitors’ attention, including exhibitions of smart wearable devices, display technologies, consumer drones, prefabricated houses, gardening, and park equipment.

Under the conditions when foreign buyers are moving from a “search for cheap goods” to a “search for reliable solutions,” many Chinese companies are changing their “strategy of exporting to foreign markets” — more and more enterprises, relying on their own research and development and a full service cycle, are shifting from the “sales of products” to the “product plus service” model in foreign markets.

This year is the first year of the implementation of the 15th Five-Year Plan. According to the data from the General Administration of Customs of the PRC, in the first quarter, the total volume of imports and exports of goods of China amounted to 11.84 trillion yuan, which is 15% more compared to the same period last year. The quarterly volume exceeded the threshold of 11 trillion yuan for the first time, and the quarterly growth rate became the highest in the last five years.

From exporting products to exporting services, from expanding scale to improving quality — the “First China Fair” together with global partners is writing a new page of openness, inclusiveness, prosperity, and development.
