Bangkok, May 7 /Xinhua/ — Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, on Wednesday presented an ambitious roadmap for transforming the country into a regional trade and logistics hub.

Speaking at the opening of the Asia Pacific Rail 2026 exhibition, he emphasized that the government strives to turn Thailand’s railway network into a key driver of the development of the country’s infrastructure, economy, and logistics, as well as ASEAN.

According to the minister, it is planned to accelerate the development of the techno-economic justification for the megaproject connecting the Gulf of Siam with the Andaman Sea through an integrated road, pipeline, and railway network, designed to significantly reduce travel time and logistics costs.

P. Ratchakitprakarn emphasized that the expansion of cross-border railway communication is the most important strategy for strengthening regional integration and promoting collective economic progress in the Lancang-Mekong subregion and ASEAN.

Thailand aims to become a transport hub by developing rail links with Malaysia and China through Laos, said an official, adding that in order to successfully achieve this goal, close cooperation in the areas of standards, technology, and regulations is necessary to ensure truly seamless transport connectivity.

He also noted that Thailand remains committed to the development of public-private partnerships in the development of the railway network and simultaneously pays priority attention to the integration of clean energy and green innovations to create a sustainable regional transport system with zero emissions.

According to the organizers, the 28th Asia Pacific Rail exhibition gathered a record number of participants — more than 5,500 industry leaders, politicians, and representatives of regulatory authorities. It is the leading regional event in the field of railway technologies and infrastructure development.

A two-day conference, involving more than 200 participants and 160 speakers, provides attendees with a platform to discuss the latest innovations in rolling stock, signaling, and track infrastructure, as well as new trends in areas such as digitalization, technical service, payments, and ticket sales.
